Changes Weekly!

EDITORS NOTE:

UNCLE RALPH JUST RETURNED FROM NEW YORK.  WHEN WE PICKED HIM UP FROM THE AIR PORT HE WAS OBVIOUSLY QUITE DOWN.  WE (THE NEPHEWS) THOUGHT HE SHOULD DO HIS WEEKLY COLUMN SINCE HE ENJOYS IT SO MUCH.  WHAT FOLLOWS IS WHAT HE CAME UP WITH.   NO QUESTIONS ARE ANSWERED IN THIS COLUMN BUT IS STRICTLY AN EDITORIAL COMMENT.  WE UNDERSTAND THAT SOME OF THE CONTENT MAY BE OFFENSIVE TO SOME AND THE VIEWS EXPRESSED IN THIS COLUMN DO NOT NECESSARILY REFLECT THE VIEWS OF THE SPONSORS.  WE WILL RETURN TO THE NORMAL QUESTION AND ANSWER FORMAT NEXT WEEK.

Ground Zero

Dear Readers,

Wow! What a week!

For those of you that pay attention to such stuff, I missed last weeks column.   This time I have a better excuse than too much Buckhorn.  I flew off to New York!  Some of you that have been receiving this email for some time (This info is never mentioned on the web site) may have an idea of what is happening.  Things have become interesting to say the least.  I got a call on Thursday night and was on a plane to New York the next morning.

I can’t say much about what’s happening or who was involved, (their initials are A.B.C.), but I can say that this was the first time that I’ve been to New York.

From my hotel room I could see the David Letterman show.  No, not on TV but the theater where the show is.   I was right on Broadway and 52nd street, directly in the middle of  the “Theater District”.  Unfortunately I was too busy with meetings and things to see a show.  I really wanted to see the show Mama Mia based on the music of ABBA, (I love ABBA) but I was far too busy.

I made a new friend there.   A life long New Yorker.  He is a consultant named Randy.  The one time we did have some time, he took me on my first subway trip.  We went to Ground Zero.  Randy lives just three blocks from there and actually saw the collapse of the World Trade Center.  I got to ask a lot of questions.

For me, viewing the big pit in the ground was more of a spiritual thing.  I’ve seen all the pictures on TV but nothing compares to seeing the real thing.  All around me stood some of the largest buildings that I have ever seen.  When the Trade Center stood it dwarfed these.  My simple mind was boggled by the thought.

Around the gaping pit was a large fence.  Most of the fence was blocked from being able to see through it by fabric put there to keep the dust down.  Guarding around the fence, stood soldiers with rifles.  But there was one place in the fence were a visitor could stand and view the site.  As you look into this massive hole in the ground, standing prominently was a cross, made from fallen beams of the collapsed building.  My understanding is that this cross fell in such a way as to stand out among the rest of the debris as if God himself placed it there.  I couldn’t help but sense that even though that this tragedy came to us, that God is still in control.  This thought became even clearer when I looked around at the buildings surrounding the pit and could see that every building had been damaged except one.  A church.  Randy told me that everything received some damage except that church.  When I saw how close that church was, and understood how much damage had been done to the buildings on both sides of it, my only conclusion could be that God IS in control.

Bolted to the top of the fence were plaques with the names of everyone that died during the attack on the World Trade Center.  I looked for someone with the same last name as mine.  There wasn’t one.  Over 3000 people died.  People with children.  People with wives and husbands.  Everyone with their own hopes and dreams for themselves and their loved ones.  Now, they’re all gone.   An incredible sadness came over me.  It’s still there as I write this.  People I’ll never know, but people just like me, their lives taken from them by a senseless evil.

That was Wednesday.

Thursday.

Work continued.  But today was different.  Just five blocks from where I was there was a war protest.  A “Die In” it was called.  This is where people lay down on the ground and pretend to be dead and other people draw chalk lines around them.  200 people were arrested.

I contrasted this to what I saw just the day before.  The names of people that died in the Trade Center: the firemen hero, the husband, the wife and the loved one, and I compared that to people that pretend to be dead.

War is a terrible thing.  But we find ourselves the target of incredible hate.  We were hated before the World Trade Center attack and we are hated now.   Ask yourself this:  Why are we hated so much?  Are we as Americans out to build an empire?  I like what Colin Powell said: The only other thing we ever asked for was enough land to bury our dead.”

As I write this we are invading Iraq.  This is a country that has used chemical weapons on Iran and even it’s own people.  It’s leaders also hate America.  This country, after agreeing to disarm, for 12 years has lied, cheated and even expelled the inspectors.  Oh, and did I mention that they also hate America?  Do we dare allow the opportunity for this evil dictator to stage or sponsor another attack against us?

I’ve been to Ground Zero.  I’ve seen the names of the people that died.   They were attacked for no reason other than that they were Americans.  To those of you that like to pretend to be dead: Are 3000 dead Fathers, Mothers, husbands, wives and loved ones not enough?  You disgrace their memories.  If your convictions are such that you cry out “Not In Our Name”, then I suggest you stage your protest at the pit of the World Trade Center.  Stage your protest before the 3000 names of the real innocent people.  Lay yourself down on the same spot that someone fell to their death to escape the fires.  Then let the world know that you feel that their deaths are not enough.  Say a prayer to their departed souls and tell them that we need another 5000, 10,000 or a million dead Americans from a terrorist gas attack or smuggled nuclear bomb before you consider America and it allies have the right to defend it self.

To those of you that pretend to be dead and the others that scream out “Not In our Name”, I give you the big Trailer Trash Finger.  You don’t speak for me.  I’ve been to Ground Zero.

Editors Note: Shortly after this page went online, Boseefus sent in the following note.  Boseefus (not his real name) is currently serving as an officer with the US Army in Korea.  Uncle Ralph is proud to support our military and our president and has asked us to include Boseefus's note as part of this weeks comments.

Dear Uncle Ralph,

I read your commentary today about your visit to ground zero.  It's sad to see people protesting against the war in Iraq. I know they have the right to express their opinions but, I also they believe they should actively and openly support those who are defending them.  It's disheartening to see people in the United States openly not supporting our soldiers.  Our soldiers are fighting to preserve our way of life.  They are also giving their lives to help those who are less than appreciative of what they have... and more importantly, they are fighting to preserve the American way of life for those that are GRATEFUL and THANKFUL for what they have.

My prayers go out to the families of my fallen comrades.  It deeply saddens me every time I watch the news and another casket draped with the American Flag is carried off of an aircraft.  My hat goes off to the soldiers in the "great big sandbox". I gladly salute our troops. I have no thoughts for them other than thoughts of gratitude and the utmost respect.  My prayers are for and with them.  If we could send Buckhorn Beer in care-packages, I would be the first one to clutter up the mail system for them. As far as the protesters go ...  I think they should go live in another country and experience a different way of life. Maybe then they would be more thankful for what they have here in the United States.  Maybe then they would stop protesting and start supporting the soldiers who are defending them.  It's sad to see American people protesting against the people who are actively fighting to preserve their right to protest.

I firmly believe our president is doing everything in his power to defend me, you, and us.  It would be a God-send to see these people pray for the military instead of protesting against what they are doing.  And for those having the "die-in" ..  well, this is a PG-13 site.  I have much stronger words for them ...  and most of those words are spelled with four letters.

As a soldier in the United States Army, I promise to follow all legal orders of my superiors and make our country safe for us and our children.  I promise, and have sworn an oath in front of God and country, to lead those soldiers under my command to accomplish whatever mission we are given ....  the same way my parents did for me ...  the same way countless numbers of Americans did for my parents and for us.  Some of those people, soldiers, fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, sons, and daughters,  heroes in my mind and heart, gave their lives for those ungrateful people to protest.

It's my prayer that the protesters will wake up soon and realize that our military needs their support, too.  Our military is keeping them from coming under ruling parties like the one Saddam Hussein runs.  Our military keeps the "Hitler's" of the world from causing chaos, death, and destruction and from coming to power again.  And to the families that have the names of loved ones who died on 9-11 and have their names posted on the fences around ground zero, you are all still in my prayers.  I hope you keep me and my fellow soldiers in your prayers.  We are fighting for you, us, our families, and the United States.  Nothing would please me more ( and probably our our soldiers, too) than to see an email or a letter with just the words "THANK YOU".  Those two words are very powerful and would give our soldiers more strength and courage to carry out their missions.

And to the families of the soldiers back home in the United States ...  we thank you.  You are the force that gives us the courage and strength to carry on with our missions no matter how difficult or dangerous they are.  I know I speak for all of the soldiers in every branch of the military when I say thank you to our families.  We are doing this for you and future generations.

To those that have died, I wipe tears away when I see a casket carried off of an aircraft. My fallen comrades took the same oath that the rest of our VOLUNTEER military took.  WE WILL DEFEND OUR COUNTRY AGAINST ALL ENEMIES FOREIGN AND DOMESTIC. We all know that we may have to give our lives for this but, it is worth it.  I can't stand the thought of my family and my little brother being subjected to terrorism or a foreign power.  Like the song says, "I'M PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN ..  WHERE AT LEAST I KNOW I'M FREE."  That song was played at the culmination of my field exercise in basic training and it brought tears to my eyes.

I was thinking of how my parents fought to keep me safe, how they fought to keep my family safe, and how they fought to keep countless numbers of families they didn't know safe.  And there are many other soldiers doing the same thing my parents did.  It's my turn to do that now.  All the other soldiers that are currently fighting are thinking the same thing. PRAY FOR US. And we thank you for your prayers that are past, present, and coming in the future.

   Boseefus

Dear Boseefus,

There is nothing more I can say.  My prayers go up for all of the members of our military.  My Big "Thank You" also goes out.
