Triplets

A Card Game for 2 or More

Created by

Uncle Ralph

Updated July-09

The OBJECT of TRIPLETS is to posses all the cards.

Game Setup

1.      Triplets uses a standard deck of playing cards. Two or more decks may be used when there are 3 or more players for extended game play.

2.      The entire deck of cards is shuffled and each player is given 7 cards.  The remaining cards become the draw pile.

 Game Play

1.      The game is begun by the dealer laying down his lowest point card.  The lowest being a 2 and the highest being an Ace.  This card is considered the WINNING card.  (Card suite is not considered in Triplets.)

2.      Continuing in a clock-wise direction the next player lays down a card of equal to or greater value. This card is then considered the WINNING card. If the player cannot lay a card down of equal or greater value then the player must lay down a card of any value and is considered OUT for the remainder of the hand.  In the event that a player is OUT then the next player must lay a card down that is equal to or greater to the value of the WINNING card.  This part of the game is called the ESCALATION.

3.      In the event that a card is played that is equal to the WINNING card, the first player that cannot play a card equal to or greater to the WINNING card must play a card of any value and is OUT for the remainder of the hand..  This also applies to the player that laid down the WINNING card.  i.e.:  player 1 plays a 5 card.  Player 2 then plays a 5 card and then player 3 plays a 5 card.  If player 1 is unable to play a card of equal or greater value then player 1 plays any card and is OUT for the remainder of the hand.

4.      The player that wins the hand is the last remaining player after all other players have gone OUT.  This player then collects all the played cards and adds them face down to the bottom of his un-played pile without shuffling or adjusting the cards in any way.  One the beginning draw pile is exhausted the players collected cards become his own draw pile that he/she will draw from.   Cards from additional winning hands will be placed at the bottom of this deck.   Once the player has exhausted their own draw pile and all cards in hand that player is now out for the remainder of the game.

5.      A TRIPLET is any three cards of equal value.  Any TRIPLET has a higher value of any card including an ace.  i.e.: a TRIPLET of deuces has a higher value of an Ace that has been played.  A TRIPLET can only be beat by a TRIPLET of a higher value, however, a TRIPLET can be NEGATED if the 4th card is played.  i.e.: a TRIPLET of 3s has been played, if another player plays the 4th 3 from the deck then the TRIPLET value has been reduced to the value of 3.  If a TRIPLET has been NEGATED, then the WINNING card takes on the value of the card.  i.e.: a negated TRIPLET of 3 is now considered just a 3 and may be ESCLATED by a card of 4 or greater.  Once a TRIPLET has been played, these three or four cards are removed from game play for the remainder of the game.  This keeps the TRIPLET from being played multiple times.  The player with the WINNING card takes the remainder of the cards.

6.      Each player replenishes his hand of 7 cards after after each play.  Once a player plays a card or a triplet, the player replaces the cards from the beginning draw pile or if that pile has been exhausted, the player draws from his or her own collected card pile.

7.      A player is out of the game when he/she has no more cards to play.

8.      The winning player is the one player left holding all the cards except those removed from the game because they were used as TRIPLETS.

Triplets was created by Uncle Ralph while camping with relatives.  Everyone enjoyed playing so much (From his nieces ages 8 and 12 on up to the drunken adults.) that we decided to publish the game here for Uncle Ralph fans to enjoy.

Kids will spend hours playing it.  It's simple enough for them to enjoy and yet requires some strategy to really master the game.
